“In the same way, let your light shine before others…” – Matthew 5:16 (NIV)
Listed among the many ordinary women that God used to advance His kingdom is the benevolent Tabitha/Dorcas of Joppa. The Scriptures in Acts 9:36-39 introduces her to us as being sick unto death, and in doing so, she is honourably referred to as a disciple. This notable title is the first and only of its kind in Scripture to be given to a woman. Although a brief mention is made of her, yet much can be said of Dorcas with regard to the impact she made on her world. The story unfolds as we see several women converge at her residence after the news of her death to mourn and lament their loss.
Their emotional responses force us to believe that Dorcas was more than a well-known and highly respected woman to attract such a faithful following. It is evident that the widows gathered were not moirologists, but they were there because her passing brought real sorrow and pain to their hearts. Furthermore, the coats showcased and testimonies shared by the mourners are convincing evidence that this industrious woman used her abilities as a seamstress and her gift of generosity to minister to the needs of others.
Therefore, we can conclude she had this testimony that while she was with them:
- She lived as a devout servant of the Lord Jesus Christ (verse 36). Can the same be said of you? Is your behaviour among the saints the same as in the company of unbelievers? While you are here on this earth with us, what testimony do you have?
- She compassionately served her gift of generosity as is highlighted that “she did good deeds,” as is encouraged by the Scriptures in Hebrews 13:16 and Matthew 10:8.
- She was given another chance at life to continue her good works (verses 40-42). Dorcas’ impact in life made an indelible mark on the lives of others, and the miracle of her resuscitation led to church growth.
What is your story? Does it bring people to the Lord or drive them away? At your passing, what do you think the reflections would reveal or confirm about you? Would you be remembered as selfish or selfless?
To this day, Tabitha/Dorcas is seen as a role model universally. She has been the inspiration for several poems, and many orphanages and charitable/missionary organisations have been named in her honour.
Sisters, take some time to consider your footprints and imprints. What impression are you making on those you influence? Are you using your gifts/talents to help others? Stop and pray and ask the Lord to forgive your missteps and misdeeds. Solicit His help to set you on course as you endeavour to answer and fulfil His call to discipleship.
